Description:

The US Dollar has been the currency of El Salvador since 2001. Prior to this the Colón was the national currency. Coins could be found in 5, 10, 25 and 50 Centavos and 1 and 5 Colón coins. Banknotes came in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 Colones.

The name 'Colon' or 'Colones' comes from the Spanish name for Christopher Columbus, Cristobel Colón.

Origin:

In 1883 the first monetary law was introduced using the Peso as the unit of currency. In 1982, the finance legislator reformed the monetary law and bought in the Colón. The Colón was again substituted by the US Dollar in 2001.
