Description:
The Mauritian Rupee is the official currency of Mauritius. One Mauritian Rupee is worth 100 Cents. Coins are issued as 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 Mauritian Rupees. Cent coins are not circulated. Banknotes come in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 2000 Mauritian Rupees.
The Mauritian Rupee was a currency of the Seychelles until 1914.
Origin:
Before the Mauritian Rupee, Mauritius had a variety of currencies circulating including sterling, the Mauritian Dollar and the Indian Rupee which was made the legal currency of Mauritius in 1876. One year later in 1877, the Mauritian Rupee was established and made the only legal tender in the country.
