Macanese pataca

Worldwide use:

Description:

The official currency of Macau is the Macanese Pataca. One Macanese Pataca is worth 100 Avos. Coins that are frequently used include the 10 and 50 Avos coin as well as the 1 and 5 Pataca coins. 20 Avos, 2 Pataca and 10 Pacata coins also exist but are not often used. Banknotes are available in 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Pataca. 10 Avos are referred to as "ho."

The word 'Pataca' comes from the name that the Portuguese used to give the Mexican Dollar, the 'Pataca Mexicana.'

Origin:

The Macanese Pataca was first established as a unit of account in 1894 and didn’t become an official currency until later. During the 19th century, Mexican Dollars, British Hong Kong and Straits Settlements Dollars, and Canton silver dollars were used in Macau. On 27 January 1906, the Macanese Pataca was established as the country’s sole legal currency and only banknotes were issued. However, silver dollar coins continued to be used by the Chinese as they did not trust the new paper money which ultimately lead to a decrease in its worth. Eventually, in 1952, coins were produced and circulated.
