Description:
The Guatemalan Quetzal is the national currency of Guatemala. The Quetzal is divided into 100 Centavos, more commonly known in Guatemala as Lenes. Coins in issue are 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 Centavos and 1 Quetzal. Banknotes in circulation are 50 Centavos, 1 Quetzal, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Quetzales.
The Guatemalan Quetzal is named after the national bird of Guatemala, the Resplendent Quetzal. It is said in ancient Mayan culture that the bird's tail feathers were used as currency.
Origin:
The Guatemalan Quetzal was introduced by President José María Orellana to replace the Peso in 1925. It wasn't until 1987 that it was pegged against the US Dollar at an equal value.
