Description:
The Djiboutian Franc is the official currency of Djibouti and is pegged to the US Dollar which is also accepted in large stores. One Djiboutian Franc is made up of 100 Centimes although Centime coins do not exist due to their low worth. Coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 250 and 500 Djiboutian Francs. Banknotes are circulated in 1000, 2000, 5000 and 10000 Djiboutian Francs.
The Public Treasury produced Djiboutian Franc banknotes from 1952. Due to increased inflation, the 5, 10 and 20 Franc notes ceased production and a 5000 Franc note was launched. In 1970, 50 and 100 Franc coins were introduced.
Origin:
When Djibouti joined the French protectorate in 1884, the French Franc was circulated alongside the Indian Rupee and the Maria Theresa Thaler which were already in use within the country. In 1908 the French Banque de l'Indochine opened a branch in Djibouti and subsequently issued banknotes for the country. It wasn’t until 1949 that Djibouti established its own currency, the Djiboutian Franc, at a rate of 214.392 Djiboutian Francs to one US Dollar.
